When I was a child, the USDA told us that there were four food groups:
- Grains
- Meat
- Fruits and Vegetables
- Dairy
Then in the last decade they came up with the food pyramid that moved some things around and changed the daily suggested requirements for each group. The doctor has always, since college, believed that the correct number of food groups are the original four plus the following:
- Fat
- Sugar
- Salt
- Nicotine
- Alcohol
- Caffeine
and last but not least:
- Chocolate
The foods contained in the doctor’s groups are usually more exciting and delicious than those of the first grouping; and he is working on the minimum daily requirements for each. Do you have a favorite food group which is unrecognized by the USDA?
