Any man and his dog?

Howard Adamsky’s article “Save Your Job” (Viewpoint, Jan. 2005) states that code is a commodity and suggests that any man and his dog could write it.  If it were so easy as the author and many CEOs claim, why then are so many projets bug-ridden failures?

Cost-effective development comes from employing highly competent individuals regardless of geography.  Eliminate the coding chaff globally, and there will be plenty of work for all.

Save your job by endeavoring to write better software.  Hustle, be enthusiastic, outread our opposition, contribute to the profession, deliver on your promises, and understand the business domain.

Letter from Paul Grew, Bristol, UK in Software Development, March 2005, Pg. 13

Wow!  I wish I had said it, because it definitely needs to be said.  There is a tool EnterpriseTenFold which I saw a demo of in Minneapolis on the 17th which might make creating applications a thing that any man and his dog could do; but I fear that we aren’t anyware near the end of this debate at this juncture.
